The family history starts with Jacob Jansz, born about 1625. He lives in ► Egmond-Binnen. His profession is "duinmeier", which is a kind of woodward in a dune area. Mostly he rented a certain dune area. In 1662, the "►Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland" startet planting ►beach grass in the dune areas. To protect the grass against the large number of rabbits, the woodwards got the task to catch them. This resulted in additional income for the woodwards. Three generations of Jacob Jansz has lived in Egmond-Binnen after which Engel moved around 1700 to Velsen in an agricultural area called "De Breesaap". In the 19th cenntury, in 1824, the family no longer lived there: one branch moved north to the village of Castricum and the branch which provided the descendants mentionned in this website moved to ►Beverwijk.

In the ►Yearbook Old Castricum , issued November 2007, the family history has been vividly described and enlivend with maps and pictures. English summary: The family name "►Duijn" is derived from Jacob Jansz occupation, being a "duinmeier" (woodward). Jacob Jansz married Trijntje Reijers. Her father Rijer Corffmaker owned 2½ acres land which were sold in 1622 to his son in law. Jacob Jansz purches in following years more land and this total was inherited after his and his wife's decease by their sons Arie and Pieter Jacobsz. See for map in the earlier mentionned yearbook on page 66. The family history continues with son Pieter Jacobsz. He marries Grietje Engelsdr. This marriage brought him great economical benefits: his father in law Engel Coopman was an alderman and had also a lot of land in the Egmond area. So Grietje, together with her three brothers inherits the properties. After Pieter's dead, his son Engel Pietersz, probably with money from the inheritance, moves to Velsen and buys there a farmhouse and rents land in the earlier mentionned Breesaap. Three generations of "Duijn" live there. They got a lot of descendants and possibly this is one of the reason that the earlier gained wealth reduced for each of the heirs. Anyhow, our ancestor Hendrik (1748-1814) did not live anymore as farmer but moved to Beverwijk and became member of the working class.
